A 1954 Press Herald photograph shows a Gulf filling station and the “20th Century Super Market” at 801 and 805 Washington Avenue, near the intersection of Ocean Avenue. A sign in front of the gas station advertises a price of 27.9 cents per gallon. As seen in the 2016 view of the same location, both buildings have been demolished and a new Cumberland Farms store now occupies the site.

The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
