PORTLAND — Amir Moss slashed his way to the basket to give Portland the lead for good in a 52-50 double overtime boys high school basketball win over rival South Portland in the inaugural Class AA championship game at Cross Insurance Arena late Saturday night.
The 20-1 Bulldogs, who rolled to a pair of regular season wins over the Red Riots, struggled this time around. But, Moss, who had 27 points and 11 rebounds, and his teammates refused to be denied.
The lead changed hands four times in the second extra session. After a missed front end of a 1-and-1, South Portland (12-10) went for the tie, but time expired.
Class A
PORTLAND — Falmouth had to be weary of Oceanside’s ability to hit from 3- point range heading into Saturday’s State Class A boys basketball title game at Cross Insurance Arena.
However, the Yachtsmen had their own weapons to lean on, jumping out to a 15-3 first-quarter lead and cruising to the Gold Ball, 59-28.
Falmouth finished 18-4, while the Mariners closed out their season at 16-6.
Thomas Coyne led the way for Falmouth with 16 points, while Matt Wulbrecht scored nine of his 14 points in the third quarter as Falmouth stretched a 23-8 halftime lead to 42-15. Colin Coyne chipped in 11 points, with Sam Skop picking up 10.
Riley Sprague paced Oceanside with six points, followed by Keenan Hendricks, Nate Roye and Sam Atwood with five points apiece.
Class B
BANGOR — Lake Region exploded out of the gate in the second half, turning a close game into a runaway as the Lakers picked up the State Class B Gold Ball with a 63-47 win over Ellsworth at Bangor’s Cross Arena on Friday.
Leading 28-24 at the half, Lake Region (20-2) used a 16-0 run to open the third quarter to claim a 44-24 lead.
Jack Lesure scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second half for Lake Region, with Nate Smith also picking 14 points and Marcus DeVoe 12.
Bruce St. Peter paced Ellsworth with 15 points, while Nick Bagley added nine.
Class C
AUGUSTA — Taylor Schildroth scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as George Stevens Academy downed Waynflete, 59-46, for the championship at the Augusta Civic Center.
GSA led 14-7, 25-22 and 40-35 at the quarter breaks and finished a solid 11-of-13 at the line. Beckett Slayton added 13 points and Jarrod Chase 10 in the win.
Milo Belleau led the Flyers with 13 points, followed by Will Nelligan with 11. Waynflete was 5-of-12 at the charity stripe.
Class D
AUGUSTA — Senior Cody Lawyerson scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to lift Valley to a 55- 44 win over Easton in the State Class D title game at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday.
Collin Miller added 16 points and Austin Cates had 11 as the Cavaliers held quarter leads of 22-12, 27-25 and 39-35.
Jake Flewelling had a game-high 20 points for Easton, with Drew Sotomoyor and Logan Halverson chipping in nine points apiece.
At the free-throw line, Valley went 10-of-13 and Easton 2-of-4.
Girls
PORTLAND — In a battle of unbeatens at Cross Insurance Arena Saturday afternoon, York sent coach Rick Clark out a winner with a 58-57 victory over Lawrence in the State Class A championship game.
The Wildcats finished 22-0, while the Bulldogs went 21-1.
Lawrence led 17-12 after a quarter, fell behind 32-30 at halftime and led again, 48-42, after three quarters, but was unable to hold off York’s Chloe Smedley, who had a game-high 23 points in bringing the Wildcats back.
Mia Briggs and Madigan Cogger finished with six points apiece for York.
Dominique Lewis paced Lawrence with 19 points, followed by senior standout Nia Irving’s 14 points.
Class AA
PORTLAND — Emily Esposito led the way with 22 points to power Gorham to a Gold Ball winning 46-36 victory over Edward Little at Cross Insurance Arena.
Gorham (21-1) also received 10 points from Mackenzie Holmes.
The Rams led 19-15 at the half and hit their first five shots of the second half to take control.
EL, led by 15 points from Emily Jacques, stayed within striking distance, trailing by just one point early in the fourth quarter before Gorham pulled away.
Jordyn Reynolds had eight points and Piper Norcross seven for the Red Eddies.
Class B
BANGOR — On Friday, Houlton out-scored Gray- New Gloucester 27-13 in the middle frames to take control en route to a 48-35 victory.
Kolleen Bouchard had a double-double for Houlton with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Teammates Natalie Hill (10 points), Rylee Warman (nine) and Aspen Flewelling (eight) also were solid.
Skye Conley paced Gray- New Gloucester with 13 points.
Class C
AUGUSTA — Narraguagus forward Kelli Kennedy popped for 17 of her game-high 20 points in the second half in a 33-25 championship victory over Boothbay at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday.
Tied at 10 at the half, Boothbay grabbed a 22-21 lead through three quarters before Narraguagus outscored the Seahawks 12-3 in the final frame.
Faith Blethen led Boothbay with nine points.
At the free-throw line, the victors were 8-of-19 and Boothbay 6-of-9.
Class D
AUGUSTA — In a defensive battle Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center, Rangeley captured a 28-22 win over Shead in the State Class D championship.
Blayke Morin led the Lakers with eight points, followed by Maddison Egan with seven and Sydney Royce with six.
Holly Preston paced Shead, which trailed 10-4, 16- 9 and 23-19 at the quarter breaks, with 10 points. Cierra Seeley chipped in eight.
At the line, Rangeley was 5-of-7 and Shead 6-of-9.
