One of the most storied programs in Division III women’s basketball history, Bowdoin will be making its 16th NCAA Tournament appearance — the most of any New England Small College Athletic Conference school.
The Polar Bears have missed just one NCAA Tournament since 2000 and have advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” on 10 occasions.
Indoor track
A handful of Bowdoin athletes competed well at the Open New England Championships this weekend at Boston University against competitors from Division I and II programs around the region.
Jacob Ellis earned the top individual finish for Bowdoin, placing second in the 1,000 meters (2:25.46), just fractions of a second off the school record.
Conor Donahue moved up to 20th in the NCAA D-III rankings with a fourth-place showing in the 800 (1:52.31), recording the best time by a D-III entrant.
Addison Carvajal placed fifth in the pentathlon (3,436 points) and was the top Division III competitor at the meet. She moved up to sixth on the NCAA D-III ranking list with the performance.
Katharine Krupp was sixth in the triple jump (38- 01.50), breaking her own school record in the process.
Bowdoin’s top relay performance was by the 4 x 800 squad of John Keneally, James Sullivan, Donahue and Ellis, who posted a time of 7:44.14, just a second off the school record time that has stood since 1981.
The ECAC Championship is scheduled for New York City beginning on Friday. Selections for the NCAA Championship (March 11- 12) will be announced early next week.
Swimming
Bowdoin first-year diver Mitch Ryan has qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship following his performance at the NCAA Regional this past weekend at Wellesley College.
Ryan was one of six divers to earn automatic qualification out of the region, placing sixth of 14 competitors to earn a trip to the championship in Greensboro, N.C., March 16- 19. He is the first men’s diver from Bowdoin to qualify for nationals since Brian McGregor in 2004.
Ryan is joined by six other Polar Bears who have qualified for the NCAA Championship in selections announced by the organization. Karl Sarier will join Ryan from the men’s team, while Lela Garner, Mariah Rawding, Mariah Reading, Sterling Dixon and Bridget Killian will represent the Polar Bear women.
