CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Jean-Louis Beaupre and Nelson Stevens were elected Tuesday to the Board of Selectmen.

Beaupre will serve the final four months of a three-year term vacated Dec. 22, 2015, by former Vice Chairwoman Susan Campbell, who ran unsuccessfully in the special election to regain her seat.

Beaupre received 71 votes, to 40 for John Corson Jr. and 33 for Campbell.

Stevens, who ran unopposed for the remaining 16 months of a three-year term vacated Jan. 1 by William Calthorpe, received 128 votes.

Beaupre, an excavator and landscaper, has lived on the island full time for six years, and said he spent his summers on Chebeague for many years. He has been chairman of the Chebeague Island United Methodist Church trustees for two years.

“I’m happy that I won and I hope that I do the people justice in terms of what they’d like to see done with the island,” Beaupre said.

Stevens, a retired boat yard mechanic, has lived in town for six years and has been visiting the island since he was born. He serves on the Board of Adjustments and Appeals and on the Coastal Waters Commission.

Stevens was also one of five representatives for the island when it seceded from Cumberland in 2007.

“I care an awful lot about this island and this community and I really want to keep it going and protect it,” he said. “If I can in some accomplish keeping the island going, I’ll be happy.”

Campbell previously said she decided to run again for the board, despite having just resigned, because “a new venture … didn’t come through.”
