SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — City work crews have begun sweeping out a homeless camp under San Francisco’s Central Freeway that was declared a health hazard and for months has been a source of irritation for neighbors and businesses in the area.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the sweep began early Tuesday morning when nearly 50 workers from the city’s Department of Public Works kicked out campers, cleaned up garbage and cleared the sidewalks.

Mayor Ed Lee’s office issued a public health nuisance abatement order and gave the residents of the camp 72 hours to pack up one week ago.

That deadline came and went and the camp dwindled in size as homeless outreach workers moved to provide resources to the few dozen people who were left.
