Strong showings at indoor track New Englands

Several local runners, jumpers and throwers turned heads at last weekend’s New England indoor track and field championship meet in Boston. Cheverus’ Tre Fletcher came in third in the boys’ long jump (21 feet, 7 inches) and placed 18th in the 55 (6.82 seconds). Deering’s Paolo DeMarco came in sixth in the 300 with a time of 35.52, which broke Hany Ramadan’s school record of 36.84. Abdi Hassan was 19th in the 1,000 (2 minutes, 39.83 seconds). The Rams 4×200 relay team (Joey Burke, Jack Lynch, Ezra Chapola and DeMarco) came in 18th (1:35.44). On the girls’ side, Cheverus’ Emily Turner placed 11th in the 300 (41.16). Julia Pomerleau was 18th in the high jump (5-1). Ashley Turner came in 20th in the mile (6:07.02). Sarah Mount was 21st in the 600 (1:41.72). Emily White finished 23rd in the high jump (5-1). Hannah Abbott was 28th in the shot put (32-3). Deering’s Annah Rossvall came in 26th in the 600 (1:46.36).

Familiar names on 2016 Maine Basketball Hall of Fame class

Former Cheverus standout Chris Jerome, former Cheverus and Portland coach Jim Connellan and longtime sportswriter Dick Doyle are among the class of new inductees to the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame. Jerome was an All-State player at Cheverus, who went on to become the most decorated player in the history of the Bowdoin College men’s program. Connellan was a player for Portland High championship teams in 1910 and 1911, then coached championship teams at Cheverus and Portland, as well as at Cony, Rockland and Winslow. Doyle spent 44 years writing for the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. The new class will be inducted in August at a ceremony in Bangor.

Girls’ lacrosse officials needed

The Maine Women’s Lacrosse Officials’ Association is offering classes for adults who want to officiate girls’ lacrosse this spring. Classes will be held at four different locations, including Falmouth High School and Thornton Academy in Saco. The cost for the course is $55. FMI, 721-0708 ormainewloa.com.
