AUGUSTA (AP) — Lawmakers in Augusta are discussing a proposal that would establish a blood-level THC limit to determine when a motorist is driving under the influence of marijuana.

The Portland Press Herald reports the marijuana OUI bill would cap the level for operating under the influence at 5 nanograms of THC per 100 milliliters of blood.

The bill, under consideration by the Legislature’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, would have a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under the age of 21.

Maine’s laws currently prohibit driving a vehicle while impaired by marijuana.

The discussion was prompted by recommendations made in December by a group tasked with studying the issue by the Maine secretary of state.

If the bill is passed, Maine would join six other states with similar legislation.
