AUGUSTA — Senate Democratic leader Justin Alfond of Portland has announced he will submit an after-deadline bill today to establish presidential primaries in Maine.

Both Republican and Democratic caucuses held over the weekend had larger than expected turnouts, with lines of voters out the door at some locations.

“Maine’s voter turnout has always been a point of pride, and while local party officials were prepared for big crowds at the local caucus, the awe-inspiring turnout meant too many had to wait in long lines to make their voices heard,” said Alfond in a statement.

“We need to have a conversation, once again, about the best way to nominate our presidential candidates, and ensure the process is easy and accessible to all.”

A majority of the leaders from both parties in the House and Senate will need to approve Alfond’s bill for consideration this session.
