BATH
Main Street Bath’s annual “So You Think You Know Bath?” quiz bowl will showcase its tenth and final year at Maine Maritime Museum this Friday.
In this year’s “best of” edition, Main Street Bath Director Jake Korb said questions were chosen after reviewing the previous nine years, selecting “the highlights … the things that spurred a lot of memories.”
Typically, 20 questions are asked per round, pertaining to the city’s history, people, events and buildings, among other topics. Following three rounds, the championship round will determine the winners.
The nine teams competing this year include the Coastal Journal, Bath Rotary Club, Regional School Unit 1, Maine Maritime Museum, the city of Bath, Sagadahoc Preservation Inc., Bath Historical Society, the Friends of Seguin Island Light Station and Fields for Our Future.
“It definitely brings a little fun rivalry around town,” Korb said.
He noted that this year’s show would also be dedicated to community member Tom Pagnotti, who served as the master of ceremonies for the event in the last nine years. Pagnotti passed away in November.
“(He) was a huge part of this event and, unfortunately, his passing earlier in the year was a real blow,” Korb said.
Former Main Street Bath president Brian Hatch, who has judged the show in past years, will be assuming Pagnotti’s role as MC this year.
“We’ve done over 700 questions about Bath and its history and we’re going to take a different direction in the future,” Hatch said on Wednesday, regarding this year’s final show. “So we’re hoping to have a great show on Friday.”
As far as the show’s conclusion, it was an anticipated move.
“From the beginning, the key team members that started this event said ‘you know, we’ll do 10 and then we’re going to retire,’” Korb said.
However, community members who are disappointed to see the show go can still look forward to a new event currently in the works by Main Street Bath.
“Main Street Bath is invested in bringing another event in a game show format, maybe not the quiz bowl, but something else,” Korb said. “We’re tossing around a few ideas internally to continue what has become a really fun, community event.”
He said any future format would attempt to keep the community and local organizations involved.
Tickets are $40 and available from members of the Main Street Bath board and the Main Street Bath office at 15 Commercial St. Downtown businesses like Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine, Now You’re Cooking and Ornament Home and Garden are also selling tickets.
The live quiz show will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Long Reach Hall at Maine Maritime Museum, while the doors open at 6 p.m. A silent auction will also take place during the event, with proceeds going toward Main Street Bath.
