Marguerite Penner Couch, 84, of Topsham, Maine, passed away on March 21, 2016. Born in Beatrice, Nebraska, she also lived in Gunnison, Colorado and Berea, Ohio as a child.

As a college professor’s daughter, Marguerite was always surrounded by books and education. After graduating from Baldwin- Wallace College in 1953, Marguerite became an elementary school teacher, working with generations of school children in Ohio, California, Indiana, Iowa, and Connecticut. Long before the advent of computers in schools, Marguerite came up with innovative and creative ways to help kids engage in their own learning. She especially enjoyed working with children who needed special attention, such as those who had reading or English language difficulties.

She and the late A. Edward Couch III were married for sixty years. Because they loved the beauty of Maine and the Sagadahoc area, Marguerite and Ed retired to Topsham in 2004. Marguerite enjoyed gardening and nature in all forms. She served on the board of CREA, Cathance River Education Alliance, for two years and later acted as a liaison between The Highlands and CREA.

A strong vocalist, Marguerite was a member of many church and community choral groups over the years. The Chorale at The Highlands brought her great joy and was an important part of her life. She also loved games, laughing, and being around her family and friends.

Known as “Krinkle “ and “Gogo” to her family, she will be greatly missed by daughters Pamela, Jennifer, Heather, and Gwendolyn, as well as grandchildren Mitchell, Tyler, Liss, Mega, and Isaac, and three sons-in-law, David, George, and Ned.

A memorial service will be held in June. Donations in Marguerite’s memory may be made to CREA, PO Box 187, Topsham, ME 04086 or to Hospice Care, CHANS Home Health Care, 60 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011. Memories and condolences can be shared at www.brackettfuneralhome.com.
