BRUNSWICK — Louis C. L’Heureux, 82 of 1 Brookmere Way, died peacefully Thursday, March 31, 2016 at The Garden at Mid Coast Senior Health Center.

He was born in Lewiston, Dec. 9, 1933, the son of Frances and Alice Gagne L’Heureux. He attended St. Dominic High School, and was in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956. He graduated in 1961 from Husson University with a B.S. degree and took graduate courses in French at Bates College and the University of Maine. He also furthered his study of the French language with classes at Hamilton College and the University of Lyon in France through grants from the National Defense Education Act.

He married Cecile Gagnon at Holy Cross Church, Lewiston, on May 30, 1955.

Mr. L’Heureux taught at St. Dominic H.S. for 3 years and was a French teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Portland until he retired in 1990.

He served as the chairman of the Lewiston Police Commission, he was a member of the first Holy Cross Parish Council and was chairman of the Holy Cross School Board, and was a member of the Maine Teacher’s Association, Knights of Columbus Council 106, and American Legion Post 153 in Auburn.

Besides being with family and friends, Mr. L’Heureux enjoyed extensive travel both domestically and internationally, fishing and boating, storytelling, and buying and fixing up rental properties in Maine.

He is survived by his wife of Brunswick; two sons, Michael of Portland and Daniel L’Heureux of Lewiston; a daughter, Joanne King and her husband Dale of Brunswick; two brothers, Norman L’Heureux and his wife Charlotte of Lewiston and Paul L’Heureux and his wife Audrey of Auburn; 9 grandchildren: Melissa Fries, Valerie King-Mallar, Andrea Croteau, Celeste Pulkkinen, Sara King, Adam King, Natalie King, Jayne King & Nathan L’Heureux and 7 great grandchildren.

Friends may visit from 4- 7 p.m., Monday, April 4th at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 5th at St. John’s Church, All Saints Parish, 39 Pleasant Street, Brunswick. Interment will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
