whitewater race

On Friday, April 8, L.L. Bean will screen film footage of the 1940 National Whitewater Championships held on the Rapid River in western Maine. The presentation will start at 7 p.m. in the camping department atrium. Until recently, the film footage was thought to be lost. The 18-minute silent film provides a treasure trove of images, incident and glimpses into canoe and kayak racing equipment and techniques of another era. Maine canoeist and author Zip Kellogg had been looking for this film for 30 years, holding out little hope that it had survived, but a twist of fate finally turned it up.

Space is limited. Those interested can reserve a spot at www.llbean.com/adventure.
