She was the oldest and longest living of eight children, born Feb. 24, 1919, in Perth, N.B., Canada, the daughter of William and Louise Murphy Gerow. The family resided in Pittsfield and she graduated from Maine Central Institute. She continued her education after high school and graduated as a registered nurse from Knox County General Hospital, School of Nursing in Rockland. She was a private duty nurse in Camden and also worked as an RN at Camden Community Hospital until her retirement from nursing.
She married LeRoy Curtis Weed in 1944. He died in 1971. She later married Thomas Powers who died in 1996.
“Gerry” as she was known to her friends, raised three children and spent the greater part of her life in Camden. She enjoyed sports and taking her children to the beach in summer months and sledding in winter months. She was a wonderful mother who loved her children and her siblings and their families. She instilled in her children the importance of lifetime education and work to get ahead in life.
The siblings and their large families met over the years for holidays, birthdays and other events. The youngest sibling, Francis Gerow, held a very special place in her heart, and she looked forward to seeing him whenever he could visit with her. She enjoyed boating on Penobscot Bay, Camden, with her husband and children and taking pictures with her camera. She spent many hours working in her outside flower gardens and attending to her indoor plants. Gerry loved her cat, Dusty, and all cats that preceded him. She had a home computer and emailed her family until she was 90 years old; she kept up on current events and enjoyed reading newspapers. She kept driving her car until she was 91. She was an active outdoor woman throughout life, and wanted to be outside when others found it too cold.
Gerry moved from Waterville to Creekside Village, Brunswick, several years ago to be near her son, Curtis, and his wife. He has been a devoted son and advocate to his mother’s health and well-being throughout her later years.
Gerry then moved to Horizons facility in Brunswick. The family would like to thank Horizons Living & Rehabilitation staff for the extraordinary care they provided to our mother and the considerable kindness they provided to Gerry’s family over the 3 years she lived at that facility.
Gerry is survived by a son, Curtis L. Weed and his wife, Lucile, Brunswick; two daughters, Patricia Weed and her husband Kevin LeClair, Rio Verde, AZ and Sharon Thomas and her husband Ronald, Tucson, AZ.
She will be interred next to her first husband, LeRoy Weed, in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta. She requested that there not be a funeral. A brief gathering at the grave site will take place at a later date.
