Disposal, brush pickup

The town will be holding a free disposal week at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center, Monday, April 25-Sunday, May 1, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The town has also scheduled a residential brush pickup week, April 25-29. Brush must be at the curb or shoulder of road by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day. Brush piles must be consolidated. For more details on both initiatives, see www.yarmouth.me.us.

Document shredding offered

The Yarmouth Recycling Committee is letting the public know that there will be a free document shredding service, Saturday, April 30, from 8-11 a.m., rain or shine, at Ameriprise Financial, 45 Forest Falls Drive. Limit is three boxes per customer. For more information, call 846-1175, ext. 208.

‘Run of the Royal’

canoe race planned

The Royal River Conservation Trust is sponsoring its first “Run of the Royal” canoe race on Saturday, May 14. Patterned after Boston’s Run of the Charles, this corporate-sponsored, four-leg canoe relay race will raise money for the Royal River Conservation Trust and its plans to acquire and improve paddling access points and shoreline habitat up and down the river.

The relay race course will begin and end at Yarmouth History Center on East Elm Street in Yarmouth. Canoes and paddles will be provided, and there will be local cuisine, live music, an art show and raffle. There is an early discounted registration fee through April 22. Farm-to-table dinners

Graze, which strives to increase awareness about the importance of supporting local and sustainable producers, will present dinners at Camp Hammond, 275 Main St. in Yarmouth, on April 22, featuring Rising Tide Brewery, and May 27, featuring Bunker Brewing Co. The evenings will begin at 6 p.m. with local live acoustic music played during cocktail hour by The Gather Rounders, a cash bar, tasting pours from the featured brewer and hors d’oeuvres. Cocktail hour will be followed by a five-course, amuse-bouche style dinner. Each course will be paired with a local brewer. Space is limited. Free tech assistance and coffee are available on Tuesdays from 2-3:30 p.m., through the end of May, at Merrill Memorial Library. Anyone having trouble navigating a new device, wanting to learn how to utilize all your phone’s feature, needing a hand downloading e-books, etc., can bring questions and your smart phone, e-reader, tablet, or laptop for help learning how to do more with your technology.

survivor to be shown

Maine Moms Demand Action is hosting a screening of the documentary, “Living for 32,” Friday, April 15, at 7 p.m., at Merrill Memorial Library, 215 Main St. In the film, Colin Goddard, a survivor of the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, shares an intimate account of his experience and the journey of renewal and hope he chose to pursue.

Tax Day Rally

coming April 16

Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew will be the featured speaker at the Tax Day Rally, sponsored by Maine Taxpayers United, on Saturday, April 16, at 9:30 a.m., in the Yarmouth Town Hall Community Room. Mayhew will be speaking on welfare reform in Maine. Maine’s first lady, Ann LePage, will be honored for her work in supporting Maine’s veterans.

The event is free and the public is invited.

Trail group party

to make a splash

The Maine Island Trail Association is celebrating the start of the 28th season of the Maine Island Trail with a boating season kickoff party, called Splash! on Thursday, May 19, from 6-9 p.m., at East Coast Yacht Sales in Yarmouth. The party will feature a silent auction, music, food, camaraderie, adventure, and the chance to learn about Maine Island Trail Association’s work taking care of and preserving access to wild islands on the coast of Maine.

Red-Eyed Fox, featuring Jake Hoffman of Tumbling Bones and Tyler Lienhardt of Tricky Britches, will perform bluegrass music. Live demonstrations of the Maine Island Trail mobile app, by local developer Chimani, will teach attendees how to use the organization’s new technology.??The silent auction includes experiential opportunities, boating accessories and apparel, outdoor gear and unique trail-related adventures. All proceeds from the auction will go toward the group’s mission of sustainable island recreation and active coastal stewardship.

Food will be provided by Royal River Grillhouse of Yarmouth. Rising Tide Brewing Co.’s will be on hand to provide beers. Members of the Royal River Conservation Trust will also be attending. More details and online ticket sales are available at www.mita.org/splash.
