A mobile home in Topsham was destroyed by fire Wednesday night, but the resident and her cat escaped without injuries.

Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said the woman who lived in the home on West Merrill Road was alerted to the fire by a smoke detector around 9:30 p.m. No one was injured in the fire, which appears to have started near a woodstove.

When crews arrived on scene, the single-wide mobile home was fully engulfed in fire.

“It’s a complete loss,” Stockdale said of the home, which is outside of the town’s fire hydrant district.

Firefighters from Brunswick, Lisbon, Bowdoin and Bowdoinham assisted Topsham crews by trucking in water. The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes, but crews stayed on scene until 1 a.m. to put out hot spots, Stockdale said.

Stockdale said the fire appears to be unintentional, but the investigation of the cause will continue Thursday.
