OLD ORCHARD BEACH (AP) — Maine fire officials say they have extinguished a fire that prompted precautionary evacuations in Old Orchard Beach.
Authorities say the wind-whipped brush fire reached heights of 30 feet and came within 100 feet of one condominium complex. The blaze was reported just before 4 p.m. Friday.
The Portland Press Herald reports that about 100 firefighters from area communities worked to put out the blaze. A Forest Service helicopter also helped battle the fire.
Old Orchard Fire Chief Rick Plummer says the wind was blowing so hard that the fire was racing through the marsh faster than fire engines that were driving past side streets.
Plummer says no injuries were reported and there was no property damage.
