Several members of the Freeport Fire/Rescue Department took home awards recently at the department’s annual awards ceremony, held at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Nicole Bouyea and Tom Parenteau, both in fire/rescue, and fire company member Brent Moonm each won Firefighter of the Year awards. Capt. Jason Cass and Lt. Dick Hogue were honored with Officer of the Year recognition. The names of all award winners are inscribed on a plaque at the station.

Fire Chief Darrel Fournier, who is retiring on May 6, said that despite the awards, Freeport Fire/Rescue is all about the team.

“These awards represent a small number of the dedicated fire and rescue members that we have here,” said Fournier, who started with the department in 1970 as a junior firefighter, and became the first full-time chief in 1983.

Lt. Alan Boucher of Freeport, who splits his time between the Freeport and Brunswick fire departments, shared EMS Provider of the Year with Capt. Rick Pierce. Boucher works per diem and as a call officer in Freeport, and as a full-time firefighter and emergency medical technician in Brunswick. He is also Fournier’s son-in-law, married to Fournier’s daughter, Crystal.

“The award is something I didn’t expect,” said Boucher, 37. “I do the job – that’s what I do. But it’s an honor to be recognized like that.”

Other awards made during the March 26 ceremony:

• Training recognition for Firefigher levels 1 and 2: Dep. Eric Sylvain, Capt. Sarah Cass, Lt. Jonas St. John, Lt. Corey Sloat and firefighters Parenteau and Bouyea.

• Star of Life Award for EMS service: Firefigher Oscar Corral.

• Bruce Libby Award, named for the late Deputy Chief Bruce Libby: the Rev. Sandy Williams.

• Chief’s Award: administrative aid Sarah Cass; Kelly Stowell, crisis response; Susan Campbell, ambulance billing; Tracy Hannah, ambulance billing; and Amy O’Neil, ambulance billing/police work.

Deputies Paul Conley and Eric Sylvain also were recognized, and an honorary award went to recently retired Police Chief Jerry Schofield for his many years of service to the town.

Service pins were presented to Bryant Sloat for 40 years in the department; Fournier, 35 years; Ed Lane and Troy Voutor, 25 years; Pierce and Conley, 20 years; and St. John and Lopez, five years.
