“Every year, we set the bar higher and we meet it, and then we set it higher and we meet it. I just want to get to the point where the bar is set and that’s the program we want. No one expects Biddeford to be good at lacrosse, and I think this year we are definitely going to be contenders,” said Albert.
Albert, who played lacrosse at nearby Scarborough, believes this year’s Biddeford squad has the right balance of veteran leadership and talent to compete with every team on the schedule.
“We have nine seniors … four of them are strong captains and are leaders on and off the field,” said Albert, who is in her fifth season with the Tigers.
Leading the way for the Tigers are senior captains Taylor Turgeon, Cameron McKeown, Mia LaFlamme and Missy Huot.
Turgeon, who already holds the school record in assists, is closing in on the Biddeford goals record. The standout now has 56 career goals after scoring four in the Tigers’ season opener on Tuesday and needs just six more to tie the record of 62.
Albert is thrilled to have Turgeon and Huot, who will be playing at Maine Maritime Academy next year, leading the Tigers’ offensive attack.
“They just bring that chemistry. Their goal is to hit people in the (eight-meter arc) and I think that’s what they bring,” said Albert.
The Tigers dropped their season opener to powerhouse Scarborough, but that hasn’t stopped their head coach from feeling confident about the rest of the season.
“I think with this team, every day they are getting better, and so I do think that they are capable … any team can win any day and they just need to keep that in mind, because they don’t give up,” said Albert.
The Tigers, who have finished the last two seasons with seven wins and a pair of playoff appearances, are hoping to build on that success and make history with their first-ever postseason win.
“We want to make it to the second round of playoffs,” said Albert, who believes her team will make a statement this season. “Everyone is going to be shocked this year.”
NOTES: Camryn McKeown has committed to play at Division II Franklin Pierce next year … Biddeford will start the season with three straight road games before hosting Oxford Hills on Saturday, April 30.
