BIDDEFORD — The nationally-ranked Colby College Mules raced out to a 13-0 halftime lead on their way to a 16-3 win over the University of New England in a non-conference match played Wednesday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

The Mules, ranked 10th in the most recent Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improved their record to 11-3, while the Nor’easters saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in dropping to 9-5.

Kendall Smith had a hand in seven goals for Colby, scoring twice and assisting on five markers. McGara DeWan and Grace McVey paced the winners with three goals each, and Abby Hooper and Bridget Horwood joined Smith as multiple goal scorers.

Kimberly Gosselin, Jolena Lampron, who is from Lyman, and Nicole Carvalho found the back of the net for UNE.

Colby was extremely efficient on offense, converting 16 of its 23 shots. The Mules held a 23-11 advantage in shots and 26-19 margin in ground balls. Sam Burch was the winning goalkeeper, turning aside three shots.

UNE rookie Korinne Bohunsky, an Eliot native, had an outstanding match in defeat, leading all players in draw controls (9) and ground balls (6). Lampron registered a match-high four caused turnovers for the Nor’easters, who got four saves from goalkeeper Courtney Kendall.

Both teams will play conference games Saturday. UNE has its final Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season home game versus Nichols College (4 p.m.), while Colby travels to No. 6 Middlebury College for an 11 a.m. New England Small College Athletic Conference tilt.
