SANFORD — The city Planning Board approved a controversial proposal for a gravel pit on Bernier Road in a 5-1 vote on Wednesday.
In an email late Wednesday night, City Planner Beth Della Valle said the application by R. Pepin & Sons Inc. to mine gravel on property owned by John Rivard was approved with 23 conditions, which were not available at press time.
Bernier Road residents lobbied against the proposal, citing noise, road conditions and other factors. Neighboring Alfred residents expressed a similar concern about possible effects to nearby Estes Lake.
