THE FOG BELL near Doubling Point in Arrowsic was replaced on Sunday by the Range Light Keepers, about 44 years after it was removed by the Coast Guard. The 1200-pound military bell was used for many years to warn mariners of the treacherous rocks in Fiddler's Reach on the Kennebec River, before a electric foghorn replaced it in the 1960s. The Range Light Keepers hope to replace the original striker mechanism inside the bell tower, so that once again the bell will sound, this time for tours from the Maine Maritime Museum.
