
Massabesic starter Weston Bergeron went the distance on the mound and would allow just four hits, while striking out eight and walking three as the Mustangs picked up a 1-0 win over the Spartans.
The Spartans would also get a strong outing from their starter as Mike Ravesi also pitched a complete game, allowing just six hits and one walk, while striking out one.
“It was a well-pitched game. I think it took an hour and 20 minutes, not even I think. The teams played good defense and pitched well,” said Sanford coach Mark Boissonneault.
Massabesic would score the game’s lone run in the fourth inning. Dawson Renaud led off the inning with a double and would score when Derek Coulombe came through with a two-out RBI single.
“It was a well-played high school baseball game. They got the hits that they needed to drive in a run and we didn’t. We had opportunities and we couldn’t capitalize,” said Boissonneault.
Massabesic was led by Jake Gregoire with two hits and Brandon Dyer chipped in with one hit.
Ryan Connarton led Sanford with two hits, while both Keith Kerrigan and Devin Gouin added one hit.
Massabesic (2-3) will host Cheverus on Thursday and Sanford (0-5) will visit Portland on Saturday
Thornton Academy 4, South Portland 0
Ben Lambert earned the shutout win against the visiting Red Riots Tuesday afternoon. The Trojan offense took off in the second inning, including an RBI single from Zach Ham and two RBI from Luke Chessie.
Boys Lacrosse
Westbrook 12, Biddeford 6
Although the Tigers fell to Westbrook Tuesday, a handful of players had impressive performances. Cody Sevigny led the Tigers with three goals, while Colby Plante, Gavon Powers and John Gilliam added one apiece. Goalie Corey Day tallied 13 saves in the cage.
Scarborough 14, Thornton Academy 11
Despite a solid offensive output, Thornton Academy fell to Scarborough Tuesday. TA was led by John Giroux with four goals, while C.J. Labreck tallied two.
The difference in the game was the second quarter when Scarborough outscored TA 6-0 and took a 10-3 lead into the half. Although the Trojans doubled Scarborough’s point total in the second half, it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Cape Elizabeth 9, Kennebunk 8
Kennebunk dropped a close game against Cape Elizabeth Tuesday. Donovan Connor led the Rams with two goals and an assist while Pat Gassman also added two goals. Brenden Whitten scored a goal and two assists, while Spencer Thibodeau, Cam Lovejoy and Bo Beveridge all scored a goal.
Wells 17, Freeport 14
The Warriors defeated Freeport in a high-scoring matchup Tuesday, thanks to some of Wells’ top players.
Ethan Marsh led the Warriors with seven goals, while Evan Whitten added five, Chad Fitzpatrick four and Sam Hazlett one.
Girls Lacrosse
Westbrook 20, Sanford 15
Sanford’s Monica Traush and Maddie Leigh led the Spartans with five goals each in their loss to Westbrook Tuesday.
Softball
Thornton Academy 12, Portland 3
Trailing 3-2 heading into the final inning, TA scored 10 runs to secure the big victory. Olivia Howe took the circle for the Trojans, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out eight.
Nine of TA’s 12 batters collected hits and were led by Libby Pomerleau who had three hits, including a triple.
Wells 13, Lake Region 3
Sam Bogue led the way for Wells going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored. Anya Chase went 2-for-2 and Sara Ring went 2-for-3 to add two RBI and two runs each.
Anya Chase pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Boys Tennis
Yarmouth 5, Kennebunk/Wells 0
Yarmouth shut out Kennebunk/Wells Tuesday afternoon, not allowing the Rams to extend a game to three sets.
Caleb Eikman fell by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 in singles, while Dan Behrens fell 6-3 and 7-6. Freshman Mason Burke also lost his singles match 6-1 and 6-0.
The doubles pair of Jared Allen and Nick Dugauquier fell in their game 6-2 and 6-0, leading to a forfeit in the second doubles game.
Portland 5, Sanford 0
Sanford dropped to 1-3 on the season after a shut out loss to Portland.
Sanford was shut out in singles, with Patrick Morris falling in two sets, each 6-1, while Mitchell Duncan lost 6-0 in two sets. Quinn Severs lost his match 6-0 and 6-1.
Sam Whitten and Dan Winchell lost their doubles match 6-1 and 6-3. Riley Legere and Aaron Signore also lost their doubles match by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Girls Tennis
Thornton Academy 5, Westbrook 0
The Thornton Academy girls tennis team won in all five games Tuesday at Westbrook. Eva Sachs and Grace Pickering each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0, while Andrea Kucharova won 6-0, 6-1 .
TA’s Emma Nassif and Cordelia Perry won in their doubles match 6-0, 6-0, and later Pilar Salcedo and Claudia De la Hoz Garcia won 6-1 and 6-0.
Portland 5, Sanford 0
The Spartans were swept by host Portland Tuesday afternoon. Sanford’s Maddy MacFarland fell in two sets 6-0, 6-0, while Corinne Laurance fell 6-1, 6-0, and Kelsey Conley 6-1, 6-0.
Sanford’s doubles team of Alaina Parison and Hannah Miller lost 6-2, 6-1, while Kim Works and Emilee Mathieu also fell by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Yarmouth 4, Kennebunk/Well s 1
Yarmouth pushed past Kennebunk/Wells Tuesday, winning all but one match against the Rams.
Rosemary Campanella was the lone victor for Kennebunk, winning her match 6-0, 6-0.
Girls Track & Field
TA sweeps quad meet
The Thornton Academy girls track team won its meet Tuesday, collecting 101 points while South Portland and Bonny Eagle scored 79, and Massabesic 33.
Alex Hart won both the 100 and 200 dash for TA. Hart also took home first in the long jump, while teammate Sam Curran placed first in the shot put and discuss. Olivia Libby won the 300 hurdles for TA, while Maria Seneres also finished first in the pole vault.
Massabesic’s Kylie Johnson placed first in the 3,200 run.
Biddeford finishes third in meet
The Tigers placed third in their meet versus Cheverus, Gorham and McAuley Tuesday, scoring 63 points.
Leia Dorais finished first in the 800 run, while teammate Lani Melton took home first in the 3,200. Biddeford’s Josie Sheltra also placed first in the javelin throw.
The team of Dorais, Abby Laverriere and Madison Perry finished first in the 1,600 relay.
Sanford places second in meet
The Spartans placed second in their meet against Portland, Windham and Deering Tuesday, scoring 83 points while Deering scored 94, Windham 71.5 and Portland 42.5.
Izzy Troop took home first in the pole vault, while Anna Saing won the javelin throw. Tian Morrison placed first in the 1,600 dash.
