SACO — Freeport High School Principal Brian Campbell has been selected as the new principal for Saco Middle School.

In a brief meeting that adjourned quickly, the School Board, with members Michel Ohayon and Edna Ben-Ami absent, unanimously nominated Campbell for a two-year contract beginning the upcoming fiscal year.

Campbell said in a brief interview after Wednesday’s meeting at Saco City Hall that this is his 17th year in education. He said he began in the field as a middle school English teacher and is enthusiastic about working with that age group.

Campbell and his family live in Saco. He has three children, twins that are seniors at Thornton Academy, and a 5-year-old, giving him a vested interest in the school department.

Campbell said he believes the direction Saco Middle School is heading aligns with his educational beliefs. “I think it’s a good fit,” he said.

Campbell will replace a position vacated by former Principal Laurie Wood in January, who left to become the principal of Westbrook Middle School. Saco Middle School Assistant Principal Mark McDonough is serving as interim principal.

According to School Department data, Saco Middle School is projected next year to have about 600 students in the sixth through eighth grades.
