FREEPORT — Waynflete dominated both ends of the field Tuesday, rolling to a 17-5 victory against Freeport in a boys’ lacrosse game.

Six players scored as the Flyers chalked up their third consecutive win to remain in contention for a berth in the Class B South playoffs.

“Any guy can step up and score three or four goals any day,” said Willy Burdick, a senior middie who had two goals and two assists.

“We have a versatile bunch of attackmen who can handle the ball and dodge from just about anywhere,” Waynflete Coach Dan Thomsen said. “When things are clicking it looks great, and it looked great today.”

Waynflete’s zone defense didn’t look too shabby, either.

The Flyers held the Falcons scoreless for nearly 13 minutes in the first half and built a 6-2 lead.

“We were six starters down so half of our starters weren’t able to play today,” Freeport Coach Geoff Arris said. “We have some injuries and a lot of kids are sick right now. A lot of kids were (ill) before the game and they couldn’t play. That changed our game plan entirely.”

The junior varsity game between the schools was canceled because Freeport didn’t have enough players available.

“We had a lot of young guys out there who were kind of seeing the field for the first time in a varsity game,” Arris said. “It took them a little bit of time to get used to holding the ball.”

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game but had trouble maintaining possession for the next 12 minutes or so, and the Flyers turned their turnovers into points.

“It was a full new attack, a new defense and half my middies weren’t available,” Arris said. “Not to make excuses but we had to go with a different game plan.”

Waynflete led 9-4 at halftime before Freeport (1-5) switched offensive tactics to rally.

The Falcons, who held a 7-5 edge in shots in the third quarter, went to a perimeter game, but Waynflete goalie Will Armstrong made six of his 12 saves in that period to keep them from getting closer.

“(Armstrong) has really stepped up for us this year. He’s kept us in games,” Burdick said. “When other teams have runs, he manages to calm us down. He makes a save or two and gets us back into the game, gets us back to scoring goals.”

The Flyers (4-2) scored their final five goals in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter.

Will Nelligan, a senior attackman, had seven goals and an assist to lead the Flyers in scoring. Cooper Chap, a senior middie, followed with three goals. Freshman Miles Lipton and sophomore Hank Duvall each scored twice with an assist, and Zane Moorhead, another freshman, also scored.

It was the third consecutive loss for the Falcons, who are trying to keep their hopes alive for a spot in the Class B North playoffs.

Reid Poisonnier, a junior middie, led the Falcons with two goals. Perrin Davidson, Eli Fox and Evan Donald also scored, and freshman Evan Owen had an assist.
