CAPE ELIZABETH — The School Board hopes to hire an interim superintendent of schools by July 1.

The board is looking for an interim school chief for the 2106-2017 school year after Craig King, the only candidate for the permanent position, withdrew from consideration two weeks ago.

School Board Chairwoman Elizabeth Scifres said the board is confident it will have an interim school chief by the end of June.

King, who is the superintendent of Regional School Unit 10 in Dixfield, withdrew after the board met in executive session April 27 and made no decision about offering him the job. He was one of two finalists, and had toured the schools prior to the board’s private meeting.

The other finalist, Steven Bailey, who heads the Central Lincoln County School System, withdrew from consideration a week earlier.

Superintendent Meredith Nadeau, who has been with the School Department for five years, announced her resignation in January. She will become the head of schools in the Newmarket School District in New Hampshire July 1.

Scifres said the School Board will continue working with the Maine School Management Association in the search for an interim superintendent. The board first hired the MSMA when it began its original search in January.

Cape Elizabeth has had interim superintendents before, Scifres said, but it can be hard to find someone to do the job.

“The trick with interim superintendents is that they are retired superintendents willing to help out for a year or so,” she said.

Kenneth Murphy, the former superintendent in Yarmouth, was interim superintendent in Cape Elizabeth in 2011, before Nadeau was hired. Scifres said he won’t be able to fill in again because he has retired to Florida.

Scifres said the board hopes to hire an interim with many years of experience.

“We’re definitely looking for someone qualified and certified,” she said. “It could be a retired superintendent or someone with interim experience.”

More information about the search will become available within two weeks, Scifres said.
