The Pownal Board of Selectmen meets on Monday, May 16, at 7 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
The Pownal Planning Board workshop for ordinance review is Wednesday, May 11, at 8 a.m., at Mallett Hall.
The Pownal Planning Board will review a subdivision proposal from Melissa and Drew Victory on Leighton Road, on Wednesday, May 18, at 7 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
Giddinge to face
Curry in race
Tim Giddinge, chairman and longtime member of the Pownal Board of Selectmen, will defend his position against business owner Heidi Curry in the June 14 municial elections. The Giddinge-Curry matchup is the only contested race in this year’s municipal elections, held from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., at Mallett Hall.
Giddinge has been on the Board of Selectmen for 9½ years, the last 7½ as chairman. Giddinge also has served on the town’s Budget Committee and Board of Appeals. Curry, who owns wedding and special events venue William Allen Farm, is seeking public office in Pownal for the first time.
Incumbent Naomi Ledbetter is the only candidate on the June 14 ballot for her seat on the Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors. Craig Vosmus is unopposed for his seat on the Cemetery Commission.
Land-use code
hearing May 18
The Pownal Planning Board will conduct a public hearing on updates to the town’s land-use codes that will be presented for vote at town meeting in June, Wednesday, May 18, at 6 p.m., at Mallett Hall. The articles under review include Article 5, Single Lot Ordinance; Article 7, Driveway and Driveway Entrance Ordinance; Article 8, Public and Private Road Ordinance; and additions to Article 2 definitions. Copies of the ordinance updates and additions are available at Mallett Hall and at www.pownalmaine.org.
This is the second of three public hearings by the Planning Board prior to town meeting.
Music night set
at Fuego Diablo
Fuego Diablo, 52 Loring Lane in Pownal, will host its next Open Mic Music Night on Saturday, May 14, with creative world cuisine served from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and music beginning at 6:30. Musicians, singers, storytellers, poets and entertainers of all ages and abilities are invited to take the stage. Performers requiring gear should bring their own. Seating is limited. The event is free and open to the public.
Now in its fourth season, Fuego Diablo is the creative endeavor of musician/composer Jamie Pearson and artist/writer Wren Pearson at their home in Pownal. Visit Fuego Diablo on Facebook for videos and photos from past music nights. For more information, call 408-3185.
Food pantry on Wednesdays
The North Pownal United Methodist Church Food Pantry on 851 Lawrence Road is now open every Wednesday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The pantry never knows from week to week what it will be getting. Fellowship, coffee and snacks are served before food distribution. The pantry helps those in need and welcomes everyone. Donations are appreciated. The church office number is 688-4938.
Men’s breakfast
First Parish Church of Pownal hosts a Men’s Breakfast the first Saturday of each month, at 7:30 a.m., at the church, open to any men who want to come, regardless of affiliation. The Rev. John Wentworth leads the discussions.
Church services
Prayer, Praise and Worship, with the Rev. Raymond St. Pierre, is held every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., at the North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road. For more information, call St. Pierre at 837-0682 or Kim Drew, church secretary, at 837-2938.
North Pownal United Methodist Church worship service is Sunday at 9 a.m., led by the Rev. Raymond St. Pierre. Sunday School for children and adults begins at 10:30 a.m. St. Pierre’s hours are Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon and Thursdays by appointment only at 688-4938. The First Parish Congregational Church, Route 9, worship service is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Sunday School for all ages is 11 a.m.-noon. Bible Study meets at the church on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Choir has started and anyone wishing to join is welcome to come to rehearsals on Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m. For more information, call the Rev.
