Unfortunately for the host Tigers, it would be all Marshwood from that point on.
The Hawks added three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh on their way to a 10-4 win over Biddeford.
“We struggled a little bit staying ahead of hitters and it seems like they always had some guys on and getting a timely hit when they needed one,” said Biddeford coach Keith Leblanc. “It was just one of those games where you felt like everything was a grind.”
Marshwood opened the scoring in the top of the first as Cole McDaniel drove in two runs with a single.
Biddeford would cut the Marshwood lead in half in the bottom of the first. Kerry Crepeau led off with a single and scored on a double from Brady Crepeau.
The visiting Hawks pushed the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third thanks to a Biddeford error, a double from McDaniel and a tworun single from Nathan Curtis.
Kerry Crepeau would lead off the bottom of the third with a triple and scored when Logan Magnant followed with a single. Magnant moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Jason Vadnais came through with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3.
Vadnais would go on to score the tying run when Colin Lavigne produced an RBI single to make it 4-4.
Marshwood came right back in the top of the fourth with three runs – highlighted by a two-run double from Holden Jackman – to take a 7-4 lead.
As the Tigers’ bats went silent, the visiting Hawks continued to add insurance runs.
In the sixth, Marshwood took advantage of an error, a walk and two hits to score two more runs – and the Hawks would add another run in the seventh on an RBI single from McDaniel.
Biddeford’s Owen Sullivan would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single – the Tigers’ first hit since the third inning – but the Hawks would get a fielder’s choice and a double play to end the game.
The loss drops Biddeford to 1-7 on the year, but Leblanc believes his team could easily be closer to the .500 level.
“We just have to kind of bust through … you know it’s the little things and we’re not doing the little things that make you win in the end,” said Leblanc.
The Biddeford coach is hoping this year’s team will find a way to make a late season run – like the Tigers did last year.
“We were 1-7 last year and we ended up playing pretty good down the stretch and making the playoffs and winning a playoff game, so I mean we can do that again,” said Leblanc. “It just takes everybody playing together and doing the little things. Hopefully we can get that going.”
The Tigers will look to start turning their season around today.
“We have a game again (Friday), so hopefully we can bounce back against Sanford,” said Leblanc.
