The bright lights of Wiscasset Speedway illuminated the track at the first evening race of the season this past Saturday. Despite the cool weather, fans lined the grandstands to watch Group One division racing, which included Super Streets, Thunder Four Mini’s, ServePro of Biddeford Saco Prostocks, New England Four Cylinder Prostocks, and the flex race of the week, Wicked Good Vintage Racers.

The spotlighted race of the evening was a 25-lap Super Street presentation. Starting on the pole was Barry Poulin, and to his right on the first row was Cody Buzzell. Tasha Dyer sped quickly into third from her fifth-place starting position. Later in the race, it became a two- car race for first between Dyer and Buzzell. As the race neared its conclusion, Dyer moved outside during lap 24, looking for the lead. Dyer quickly shot to the side of Buzzell and the duo raced door to door. Dyer dug deep and her car edged ahead by a nose, flying under the checkered .063- seconds ahead of Buzzell for the win. Buzzell had to settle for second. Poulin placed third.

Two 20- lap flex races were next on the agenda. The two features were raced by the Wicked Good Vintage Racers. The first WGVR feature was the Late Model Division. The group paid tribute to the life of Steve Reny, a long time race car driver from Wiscasset Speedway who died in January. Amy Reny, Steve’s wife, was behind the wheel of the No. 7 car. At the start of the race the pole position was left empty in honor of Reny.

When the cars shot over the start line, Brian Hughes jumped to the lead. His advantage was short-lived because Keith Smalley passed Hughes for the lead during lap two. Kevin Waterhouse moved to second and Mark Theranault advanced to third. By lap four, Theranault was in the lead and stayed there to take the win. Waterhouse and Bobbie Symonds battled it out for second place, but ultimately Symonds gained the advantage and took second. Waterhouse placed third.

The second WGVR race featured the Outlaw class. Ryan Chadwick started on the pole. To his right was Scott Tucker and behind him was Bob Guyon. The action was quick when racing began. All eyes were on Wiscasset’s James Osmond, who rapidly moved from the back of the pack to the lead by lap five. Gary Dwinal followed Osmond to take second, with Chadwick falling back to third. Race leaders remained constant until the final lap, when Dwinal spun coming out of turn four, just before the finish line. Chadwick advanced to second and Guyon to third. Osmond took the win.

Wiscasset’s entry level class was next on the track. The Thunder Four Minis competed in a 20- lap race that quickly sped by. It was a mad dash for the lead at race start, but by the conclusion of lap one, the top three had secured their winning spots, and they stayed there. Travis Poulliot was in the lead and cruised to first place. Michael Harrison took second and Jeff Minchin Jr., came in third, holding off Joe Katula. Minchin failed post-race inspection and third was later awarded to Katula.

The ServePro of Biddeford Saco Prostock race was exciting from the start. Fifteen cars competed in a 40- lap feature event. Starting at the pole was Ajay Picard, second Chuck Colby and third was Mike Orr. There were two cautions during the race, and they both happened in the first lap. On the restart, Colby shot to the forefront, but Picard quickly snatched the lead back. Jeremy Davis passed Orr for third.

Davis was not content with third and passed Colby during lap two for second. Davis then drove up to the rear of Picard and chased him around the track. During lap six, Davis bumped Picard and slid underneath for a pass, taking the lead. Lap 10 saw another change in the top three when Nate Tribbet passed Colby for third. Ahead, Davis had gained a commanding lead, running away with the win. Picard was in second. It looked like Tribbett had third place in hand when suddenly, during lap 37 his car experienced mechanical issues was forced to the pits. Nick Hinkley advanced to third.

Wrapping up the show was a 25-lap New England Four Cylinder Prostock race. The race was a jumble from the start as there were numerous cautions, and the race ended under a yellow and the checkered flag.

Starting at the pole was Brooke Knowles, who was able to hold the lead for the first five caution-free laps. But she dropped to third when she was passed by both RJ Pinkham and Jef f Prindall. During lap eight, Prindall spun on the back stretch, bringing out a caution. Prindall was sent to the back. Moving up to fill the void was Ryan Hayes. By lap 12, Hayes was in second. Pinkham and Hayes battled for the lead until lap 10, when the duo spun on turn three and most of the field was gathered up in the ensuing chaos.

Kamren Knowles took the win, Prindall placed second and Hayes took third.
