BRUNSWICK
The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority has rented out all its space in their small T-hangars. With more room opened up on the ramp following demolition of the old fire department, the authority wants to put out the word they have plenty of room for personal hangars at the Brunswick Executive Airport.
MRRA Executive Director Steve Levesque said it’s something they’ve been marketing for a long time at trade shows and aviation shows. MRRA has now taken to social media to find potential lessees who are anxious to build their own hangars.
Levesque said the plan is similar to what other airports, such as Lewiston and Sanford, are doing.
With ample room to grow in the large hangars, Levesque said that space is awaiting larger aviation interests on the scale of resident businesses Tempus Jets and ONE Aviation.
Levesque said it’s essentially like building a $150,000 to $300,000 garage for your aircraft. There are two locations where hangars can be constructed. A mockup of the area shows a cluster of spaces for four 40-by-40- foot buildings, one 50-by-50-foot and two 60- by-60-foot hangars.
A second location is on the north ramp along the southern fence line although the necessity for additional surface prep and increased snow removal operations in the area make it less desirable for building.
Levesque said with warmer weather moving in, air traffic has increased at the airport with a substantial uptick in jet traffic last week.
“We just did a bunch of business last week,” he said.
Levesque said he also expects to see more air traffic in advance of Bowdoin College’s graduation ceremonies on May 26-28.
“We’ll see a lot of jets out here,” Levesque said.
In 2015, the airport logged more than 14,000 air operations. The facility currently has more than 650,000 square feet of hangar space and more than 103 acres of taxiways and aircraft parking space.
