AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine nonprofit group that focuses on economic development is awarding scholarships to workers in the state who are pursuing college degrees and other higher education programs.

Next Step Maine is giving $35,600 to the 28 workers. The grant program is a statewide effort to assist workers in the state who are working toward a bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree or a certificate program.

Next Step Maine is part of Maine Development Foundation, a private nonprofit organization that targets its efforts on economic growth.

The winners of the scholarships are from seven counties and range from $600 to $2,000.
