All things are go for Portland Metro to launch passenger bus service for the first time to Freeport and Yarmouth on Thursday, June 16.

Denise Beck, director of marketing for the Greater Portland Transit District, said that kickoff events are scheduled for that morning in both towns. The first trip for the public to leave Freeport will be at 11:30 a.m., Beck said. She added that Portland Metro will provide additional information on the special events in early June.

The first of three Freeport stops will be in front of L.L. Bean headquarters at the intersection of Lower Main Street and Casco Street. The second pickup will be in front of the Town Hall, then the bus will make its final stop at L.L. Bean prior to turning around and heading south with its passengers.

There will be nine weekday trips, from 6 a.m.-7 p.m., and five Saturday trips, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. The regular one-way fare is $3, and a reduced one-way fare is $1.50. Persons 65 and older and disabled persons with a Medicaid card are eligible for the reduced fares.

Greg Jordan, Portland Metro general manager, and some of his staff attended informational meetings on service details last week, including one at the Freeport Community Library.

“Greg Jordan presented information and answered questions about the new service,” Beck said. “It sounds like residents are enthusiastic and looking forward to it.”

In September 2014, the Freeport Town Council approved spending up to $90,000 for a three-year trial of the Portland Metro service, from Freeport to Portland, with stops in Yarmouth and Falmouth.

Town Manager Peter Joseph noted last week that the council will review the success of the service, including ridership levels, near the end of the trial run, prior to making another commitment. As for now, Joseph said, people are happy that the nearly two-year wait is over.

“I think people are satisfied that it’ starting,” Joseph said. “I think it’s been a pretty good end result with the new buses they have.”

The buses have seating for 16, a ramp for the handicapped to gain access, and a bicycle rack.

A brand-new Portland Metro passenger bus was showed off outside the Hilton Garden Inn of Freeport last month. Bus service to and from Portland begins June 16.
