BRUNSWICK

For the first time this season, the Brunswick High School girls lacrosse team struck for the game’s first goal in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference game against a talented Lewiston team.

The Dragons might want to incorporate that strategy more as the hosts held off a late Blue Devils rally for a big 8-6 victory on Wednesday.

The win gives Brunswick a 2-6 record, but more importantly, according to coach Alex Sullivan, a boost of momentum as the season heads into the final stretch.

“We started and we finished, which gives them confidence and the knowledge that they can do it,” said Sullivan, whose Dragons visit Yarmouth Friday night at 7 p.m.

Tied 1-1 after Amelia Hawley scored for Brunswick and Lewiston answered on a goal by Sasha Leclaire, the Dragons received goals from Hawley, Sarah Ferdinand and Colleen McKearney for a 4-1 lead. Dina Murphy answered a tally from Gabby Wilson to give Brunswick a 5-2 lead.

The Dragons opened the second half strong, getting a goal each from Murphy and Ferdinand to extend out to a 7-2 advantage with 17:27 remaining.

But, the Blue Devils ran off a 4-0 run, getting three goals from Kristina Blais and one from Christina Class to close to 7-6 with 7:44 left.

Brunswick held on from there.

“We stayed as calm and composed as we could on defense, stopping their cuts,” said Sullivan. “Once we had possession we were able to stall and run out a large portion of the clock.”

Brunswick finished Lewiston off when Jenna Brooks scored off a Hawley setup with 13 seconds remaining.

Jenna Bailey had three assists in the win, while Hawley added two helpers to her two goals.

Mikaela Aschbrenner had 18 saves and an interception in the Brunswick cage, while the Dragons won 11-of- 14 draw controls. Murphy led in groundballs, along with defender Anna Webster. Lydia Ginty, Tessa Alexander and Beth Labbe paced the Brunswick defense.
