New Hampshire (19-19) put up four runs in the top of the first and never looked back, taking the Eastern League finale of the series over the Portland Sea Dogs (15-26), 8-2 to avoid the sweep at Hadlock Field.
Justin Haley walked the first four batters he faced and his scoreless inning streak ended at 18 innings.
Roemon Fields scored the game’s first run, coming home from third base when Jon Berti was caught stealing at second. Later in the inning, KC Hobson delivered the big hit with a bases clearing three-run triple.
Haley allowed four earned runs on two hits a third of an inning.
New Hampshire starter Jason Berken lasted four innings and allowed two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out three.
Cole Sturgeon hit a leadoff homer for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the first, while Wendell Rijo had an RBI groundout following an Aneury Tavarez triple to account for the two Portland runs.
The Sea Dogs managed just one base runner against the New Hampshire bullpen. Danny Barnes pitched a perfect fifth and sixth with three strikeouts, Murphy Smith was perfect in the seventh and eighth with two strikeouts, and Wil Browning closed out the game walking one in the ninth.
The Sea Dogs are off today and begin a road trip on Friday in Altoona, Pa., against the Curve.
