MADISON ( AP) — The Madison Paper Industries mill has ceased production.
Nearly all 214 employees in Madison are losing their jobs after production ended over the weekend, but a handful of maintenance workers are being retained to maintain buildings and a hydro facility.
Madison Paper President and CEO Russ Drechsel told the Morning Sentinel that the mill’s parent company is still seeking a buyer. But he said there were no new developments.
The closing was blamed on weak demand for glossy magazine paper produced by the mill.
Madison Paper is the fifth Maine paper mill to be shut down in little more than two years. Its closure will leave only six mills operating in the state.
