Recognition

Portland psychiatrist Dr. Anne Hallward has been named the 2016 recipient of the American Women in Psychiatry’s Jeanne M. Spurlock Social Justice Award. The national award recognizes one psychiatrist on behalf of marginalized people to tell their stories, improve their lives and advocate for their health and human rights. Hallward received the award for creating Safe Space Radio, a radio program and podcast that offers a forum for conversations about difficult subjects. On May 17, Hallward was honored at the American Psychiatric Association’s Women national meeting in Atlanta.

Deborah Hoch, ACNP-BC, of Maine Medical Center, was recognized with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners 2016 State Award for Excellence, which will be presented at the association’s national conference in June in San Antonio, Texas. The annual award recognizes a nurse practitioner in each state who has demonstrated excellence in clinical practice. Hoch has worked at MMC for 14 years in the Division of Transplant Medicine.

The Spurwink Services Brunswick Program at 675 Old Portland Road walked away with the top award at the 11th annual Spurwink Chili Cook Off. The inter-agency community event challenged chili-cook off winners from the Southern Region, Lewiston/Auburn, Casco, Cornville, and Chelsea Residential Programs to compete for the grand chili champ prize. The Brunswick program is one of Spurwink’s many specialized services supporting the health and well-being of children, adolescents, adults and families.

Spurwink recently named Erin Cassidy the Brunswick Program employee of the year. Cassidy, who is the assistant program director of education, was nominated for her dedication to clients and fellow employees by the Brunswick residential and education teams.

The National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts honored Seth Webber of BerryDunn in Portland with an Outstanding Member Award. Webber will co-chair NACVA’s annual conference in San Diego, and serves on the Institute of Business Appraisers Board of Governors.

Hires, promotions, appointments

Jeremy Cluchey will be joining the Maine Audubon team as director of Communications & Marketing. A Maine native, Cluchey brings over a decade of strategic communications and management experience in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, most recently at Bates College.

Westin Portland Harborview announced that Deborah Pillatsch has joined the hotel team as director of sales and marketing. Pillatsch previously held the same position at the DoubleTree by Hilton in South Portland.

Maine Medical Partners, a department of Maine Medical Center, has hired three new physicians. William Talpey, M.D., has joined Geriatic Medicine. George Russell, M.D., M.Sc. has joined Maine Medical Partners – Pediatric Specialty Care as division director. Catherine Curry, M.D., is with Maine Medical Partners – Portland Pediatrics.

Sebago Technics, a South Portland-based engineering consulting firm, has hired four new design professionals: Permitting Specialist/Project Coordinator Rebecca Gabryszewski; Permitting Specialist/Permitting Coordinator Emmerald “Emmy” Irvin; Survey Technician Caleb Gervais; and Civil Engineer Matthew McGuirk.

Giving back

Local Supercuts at Scarborough, Falmouth, West Falmouth, South Portland and Bath are participating in MjjM Salons’ ONE Campaign to raise money for Animal Welfare Society, Look Good Feel Better, Angel Flight NE, Caring Unlimited, and amFAR. The ONE Campaign encourages guests and stylists to donate $1 during the months of June and July; since 2013, over $63,000 has been raised for nonprofits.

Norton Insurance Agency donated $500 to the Travis Mills Foundation. Jeff Woodbury, account executive, presented the check to Mills and the Foundation’s board of directors in Augusta at The Blaine House. The Travis Mills Foundation helps wounded and injured soldiers and their families.

New Ventures

Royal Rose, the Brunswick-based company that produces organic simple syrups, has released two new mixers: Real Sour Mix contains organic sugar, water, organic lemon juice and organic lime juice. Natural Syrup contains organic demerara sugar, water and organic lemon juice.

sweetFrog Enterprises, LLC has reopened the Gallery Boulevard location in Scarborough, which is the fourth sweetFrog store in the state. sweetFrog offers a wide selection of frozen yogurt flavors and toppings, with a self-serve model.

Grants & Awards

The MaineHealth Accountable Care Organization of Portland has been awarded a $70,000 grant by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care,to help streamline the pediatric referral process by standardizing the way in which pediatric primary care providers refer patients to specialists.
