Fiore Artisan Olive Oils & Vinegars owners Nancy and Pat O’Brien, knowing for some time that the building at 58 Main St. in Freeport eventually would not be suited for their business, were looking to move the store to Brunswick early this year.

In fact, the O’Briens have opened their fourth shop at 90 Maine St. in Brunswick. But they’re also retaining a store in Freeport – at a potentially more visible location, right underneath Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen & Topside Tavern. Both stores have been in operation for nearly three weeks, and, since Memorial Day, are open daily from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

The future of the location at 58 Main St. has been in question for more than a year, after Berenson Associates purchased the Denney Block, comprising the buildings from Mill Street to the Cole Haan building. That included Fiore, in a building that included a bumpout. Berenson plans to reconfigure that building when it builds a new structure in a now-vacant space between 56 and 58 Main St

“Based on knowing that in the not-too-distant future there was going to be a need to be a move made because of the nature of the construction, we started to look around,” Pat O’Brien said last week. “First, we found the location in Brunswick. Then, in the process, we received lots of input from restaurants and B&Bs that it would be too bad for Fiore to leave Freeport. It turned out that there was a space available right next to Linda Bean’s. We put a deal together with Linda Bean. We’ve got a strong customer base here anyway. Everything fell into place and it was the best of both worlds.”

O’Brien said that Tuscan Bistro, Petrillo’s, Azure Cafe and other restaurants in town use Fiore premium olive oils and vinegars, and tout them to their customers.

Stephanie Petkers, executive director of the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce, said that Nancy O’Brien consulted with the chamber, FreeportUSA and the Freeport Economic Development Corp. in mapping out a strategy to remain in Freeport.

“They’re really smart businesspeople,” Petkers said. “When a small business owner is thrown a major curve ball and makes the most of it, it shows what savvy business owners they are.”

Petkers said that the chamber is pleased the Fiore has found the new Freeport location.

“It’s a more visible location in Freeport,” she said.

Fiore Artisan Olive Oils & Vinegars began operations in Bar Harbor nearly seven years ago, and that store is home base for the O’Briens, who live in Bass Harbor. Since then, they’ve opened shops in Rockland and Freeport, and Fiore has a tasting bar at The Vault in Lewiston.

“We’re in every store every week at least a day or two,” Pat O’Brien said.

Fiore Artisan Olive Oils & Vinegars has relocated its Freeport store to 88 Main St., beneath Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen & Topside Tavern.
