KENNEBUNK — Sharp pitching from Cody Cousins and timely offense led the visiting Wells baseball team to a 7-2 win over Kennebunk in the regular-season finale on Wednesday.

Cousins pitched all seven innings, allowing only two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Wells coach Todd Day was pleased with Cousins’ performance along with the defense behind him.

“He was moving fast, throwing strikes. I thought he had a real good fastball today. Our defense played great behind him which has been our M.O., to put the ball in play and make the plays. But I thought Cody was in complete control today,” said Day.

Kennebunk coach Brian Dill was also impressed with Cousins.

“He kept us off balance all day, he pitched great against us today and earlier (in the season). He’s tough, he has great control, he uses his off-speed pitch well and has a sneaky fastball,” said Dill.

Wells got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI from Camren Cousins.

The Warriors added two more runs in the third off back-to-back RBI singles by Cody Cousins and Charlie Bell.

The Rams responded in the following half inning, scoring two runs off a John Jarowicz single and an error off the bat of Justin Wiggins, cutting the Wells lead to 3-2.

Wells would put the game out of reach for the Rams in the fifth, scoring three more runs. Two came from a two-run double from Bell and the other on a sacrifice ground out from Camren Cousins. Wells would add its seventh run in the seventh inning off a past ball.

The Rams used three pitchers on the day. Wiggins got the start, pitching two innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Ryan Coughlan pitched the next four innings in relief, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out three. Eric Aiken closed out the game, allowing one run on no hits in the seventh.

Day was also happy with his team’s offense, an area that has been a struggle for the Warriors throughout the season.

“We didn’t strike out many times today and when we put the ball in play we got things going and were moving on the basepaths. We hit a few gaps which hasn’t happened recently, we have struggled putting up runs this year so when we score seven runs we will win most games with the pitching we have,” said Day.

Dill was disappointed in his team’s loss and felt that Wells played a much stronger game than the Rams.

“Give (Wells) a lot of credit, they played well, and for some reason it seems like this game meant a lot more to them than it did to us. I thought we were a little flat and they were the better team today … they were the better team all year,” said Dill.

Wells finishes the regular season with an 8-8 record, clinching the No. 8 seed in the Class B South playoffs.

Pitching will be key for the Warriors in the postseason.

“Our pitching staff has been solid and consistent all year. All of our guys have had good years, especially our top two in Cody Cousins and Charlie Bell. They have had tremendous ERA’s, they don’t walk many people and put the ball in play,” said Day.

Kennebunk clinched the No. 12 seed in the Class A South playoffs with a regular season record of 6-10.
