PORTLAND
Reading (36-18) continued its offensive onslaught and completed a three-game Eastern League sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs (18-35) with a 15-9 win on Thursday afternoon in front of 6,850 fans at Hadlock Field.
Already leading 1-0, the Fightin Phils sent nine to the plate in both the fourth and fifth innings, scoring six in the fourth and five in the fifth to jump out to a 12-0 lead. Dylan Cozens finished 4-for-6 with two doubles and four runs scored, while Jake Fox went 4-for-4 with two homers, four runs scored and three RBIs. Joel Fisher went 2-for-3 with grand slam, double, six RBIs and two walks.
Reading combined to score 33 runs in the series.
Making his first start since coming off the disabled list, Kevin McAvoy allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in three-plus innings, walking two and striking out one.
The Sea Dogs rallied back, first cutting away at the deficit on a three-run homer by Rainel Rosario in the fifth inning, his first as a Sea Dog. Portland scored four more runs in the sixth inning on four singles and a pair of Reading errors to make it a 14-7 game.
Reading starter Nick Pivetta went five-plus innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits, walking one and striking out six.
The Sea Dogs open up a four-game series at Hartford tonight at 6:05 p.m.
