GEORGETOWN

The Georgetown Historical Society is hosting a 300th birthday celebration for the town.

The free event commemorating the incorporation of Georgetown in 1716 will take place Sunday, from 1-3 p.m., at the society’s headquarters. The official birthday is Monday, but society members thought they would get a better turnout on a Sunday.

Trish Bonner of the GHS has been putting the tricentennial event together.

“We’re having music with our troubadour, Alison Freeman, who is going to be milling around the crowd and performing,” Bonner said.

Bonner said there will be speeches as well, but promised they would be short. Historical society speakers from Woolwich, Arrowsic, West Bath and Bath will talk, offering reasons why those communities along with Phippsburg splintered off from the town.

“Woolwich was mainly a farming community and Georgetown was fishermen basically, lobstermen — two different cultures. And I think as Bath grew, it just seemed appropriate (to break off),” Bonner said.

A Georgetown selectman will speak, followed by GHS President Jeanne Bailey McGowan.

An exhibit of old schoolhouses from Georgetown will be on display before cake and ice cream are served. Cupcakes will also be served with tops decorated in a nautical theme with clam shells and lobster buoys.

Bonner said representing the future of Georgetown, fifth and sixth graders from Georgetown Central School will be official cake cutters.

McGowan said that one of the things that makes this event so special will be the presentation of a time capsule.

McGowan said the capsule, built by Bill Plummer, will debut at the party. The tricentennial committee will spend the summer taking suggestions on what should be placed inside.
