The citizens of Wells will be voting on the purchase of land for a new public safety complex and construction of the facility, as well as construction of a new fire station to replace and combine two old stations.

This is a very large project with a sizable cost. I am a taxpayer and a retiree who is concerned with increases in my tax bill. However, in this instance, I am in favor of the expense to enhance the public safety service within the community.

I have lived closely with the current public safety structure as the retired assistant fire chief for 18 years. I have worked out of Highpine Station since joining the department. I assisted in the rebuild of the kitchen and the raising of the roof to make room for larger equipment.

I assisted in modifications to the Branch Station to allow for a larger engine to fit. I shared office space with the chief at the Corner Station since no other space was available. The Police Department has operated in space that is far too small for the services they provide.

The town has maximized the usefulness of the current building, placing our dedicated public safety members in substandard conditions. Yes, this is one of those times when raising my tax bill is a very acceptable move. Please join me in the support of this item on the ballot for the town of Wells.
