BRUNSWICK

A 35-year-old man led police on a chase Saturday night through Brunswick to his home on Mere Point Road where he had a standoff with police several hours before he was taken into custody early Sunday morning.

Lewiston Police Department notified lcoal agencies at 8:22 p.m. to watch for a 2014 BMW after the driver was been involved in a disturbance and reportedly threatened to kill himself with a firearm.

Members of the Topsham Police Department and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office pursued the vehicle to 383 Mere Point Road in Brunswick. It was there that the lone 35-year-old man fled into his residence, according to a press release issued Sunday morning by Brunswick Police Department.

Responding officers were advised that the man had threatened to kill himself if officers entered the residence, and they learned at least two firearms were in the residence.

A standoff ensued. Brunswick Police Department’s Special Response Team was activated and  Mere Point Road was closed to vehicular traffic between Simpsons Point  and Rossmore roads. The Cumberland County Emergency Services Unit and the Freeport Police Department’s K-9 unit assisted.

The man refused repeated requests to leave the residence, but was eventually taken into custody at 2:16 a.m. According to police, he was uncooperative and transported to Mid Coast Hospital for evaluation. Two firearms were recovered from the residence, an AR-15 rifle and shotgun, which police took as well.

Brunswick police say if the man is released from the hospital, he will be transported to the Brunswick Police Department for processing of criminal charges. It is believed that further criminal charges are forthcoming from Lisbon and Topsham police departments for his actions prior to entering the town of Brunswick.

“We are thankful that the situation was brought to a peaceful ending, without violence or injury,” said Brunswick Police Cmdr. Marc Hagan. “We are also thankful for the assistance, patience, and teamwork of all agencies involved which led to this peaceful conclusion.”
