LEWISTON — The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans are going to play for a state championship in boys tennis after they knocked off Falmouth 3-2 in a battle of unbeatens in Thursday’s Class A South final at Bates College.

The Trojans, who came in as the top seed in the region with a 14-0 record, would receive wins from their top two singles players, but would need a victory from their second doubles team to secure the win over No. 2 Falmouth.

Dariy Vykhodtsev picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Falmouth’s Alex Klemperer in first singles and TA’s Viktor Schwarz would cruise to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Peter Stegemann in second singles.

Falmouth received a critical win from Matt Adamowicz in third singles as he took down Jack Xiao in three sets – 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

TA’s top doubles team of Dylan Gooch and Jared Waterhouse would drop their match, 6-0, 6-3, to Jordan Bruce and Greyson Cohen.

The first point of the day, which turned out to be crucial for the Trojans, came from Jackson Dohse and Asher Thompson, who took down Trey Fallon and Calvin Spencer 6-3, 6-2 in second doubles.

The victory provided Thornton Academy its first ever regional tennis championship – and the Trojans will look to add a state crown on Saturday when they face Class A North champ Lewiston.
