A veterans monument donated by Cornish residents has found a home in Windham.

The monument will be dedicated at the Windham Veteran’s Center on Flag Day, June 14, from 9 a.m.-noon,

The celebration will include refreshments, music and speeches from local veterans to commemorate the monument, which is dedicated to all veterans of war.

The five-person Cornish Veteran’s Monument Committee purchased the monument more than a year ago, according to Calista Cross, president of the committee. They had spent nearly three years raising $5,600 for purchase of the monument through bake sales, suppers and grants to purchase the monument.

But residents in the town could not come to an agreement about where to place the monument. At that point, Cross said, the committee turned to the Windham Veteran’s Center, who “were very interested in the monument,” she said.

It was a big decision to move the monument to Windham, Cross said. The committee wanted the monument to be place in a park, or “someplace special for our veterans,” she said.

The monument has been at the Veteran’s Center since last year, Cross said, waiting for the final affairs to be put in place before the dedication.

“It didn’t go how we wanted it to initially,” she said, “but we’re happy it ended up the way it did.”

The 6-foot black granite monument “looks beautiful surrounded by yellow daffodils,” Cross said.

At the ceremony, the committee will also dedicate 110 pavers donated to veterans and their families from Cornish and surrounding towns. The pavers were purchased with grant money, Cross said, and were given free to any veteran interested veteran.

A monument to veterans of war, donated by a group of citizens from Cornish to the Windham Veterans Center, will be dedicated with a ceremony on Flag Day, June 14.
