CUMBERLAND

Josh Burke held Greely scoreless for five innings, and Austin Langley and Josh Spaulding each recorded three outs as the seventh seeded Freeport High School baseball team slipped past No. 3 Greely, 1-0, in a Class B South semifinal upset on Saturday.

The Falcons ( 13- 6) ended Greely’s (12-5-1) hopes of a third straight State Class B title and sent Freeport to Wednesday’s Regional final against top-seeded Cape Elizabeth, a 7-1 winner over No. 4 Maranacook on Saturday.

Freeport meets the Capers on Wednesday at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, with first pitch slated for 6: 30 p.m.

Jack Davenport brought in Freeport’s lone run, scoring Max Doughty with a third-inning single. Doughty was hit by a pitch and stole second before Davenport brought him home with his two-out hit.

Burke held Greely to two singles and two walks. He struck out two.

Caleb Normandeau struck out 12 for the Rangers.

RICHMOND 1

VALLEY 4

Cody Laweryson struck out 16 and permitted just two hits as the host Cavaliers, the No. 2 seed, knocked third-seeded Richmond (12-6) out of the Class D South postseason on Friday in Bingham.

Laweryson allowed a run in the first inning, with Brendan Emmons stealing home.

But, Colin Miller singled three times and drove in a pair of runs for Valley (14-2), which scored two runs in both the first and second innings.

Brendan Ames tripled and scored a run for the hosts, while the Bobcats received a single each from Curtis Anderson and Matt Rines.

Zach Small and Brendan Emmons combined on 11 strikeouts and seven walks on the hill for Richmond.

Valley meets top-seeded Searsport Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Standish.

Girls lacrosse

WATERVILLE — Topseeded Messalonskee broke out of the gates with five early goals and rolled to a 12-1 Class A North semifinal victory over fifth-seeded Mt. Ararat on Saturday at Thomas College.

Messalonskee, 13-1 and slated to host No. 3 Lewiston in the Regional final on Wednesday, led 10-0 at the half and permitted only two shots on goal to Mt. Ararat, which closed at 6-8.

Lydia Dexter, Ally Turner, Lauren Pickett and Nathalie St. Pierre had two goals each in the win.

Ronni Pelletier tallied the lone goal for Mt. Ararat with 9:30 remaining in regulation.
