SANFORD — Voters said no to both the municipal and school budgets, but because of language in the city’s charter, the budgets are presumed to have passed.
Sanford voters rejected the municipal budget 1054 – 785, and the school budget 968-862 in unofficial totals.
But the city charter says if the turnout is less than 25 percent of the number of votes cast in the last gubernatorial election then the budgets are deemed to have passed.
The total number of votes cast was 1,849; the 25 percent threshold is just 18 more, at 1867 votes.
The total school budget is $38.1 million; with $14.4 million to come from local taxation.
The total municipal budget is $24.6 million, with $14.4 million to be raised through taxation.
