OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (9-3) won their fifth straight game on Tuesday night as they defeated the visiting Sullivan Explorers (5-7) at The Ballpark with a final score of 10-9.
The Explorers took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, with Gevon Jackson, Adrian Gonzalez and Maine-native Nick Grady each picking up RBIs.
The Surge battled back, getting within 1-run off a 2- run triple from first baseman Chris Allen.
Sullivan would take a 4-2 lead in the second off a solo homerun from shortstop Nate Coronado.
The Surge would take the lead in the third off a 380- foot, 3-run bomb from third baseman Luc Pomales, scoring Allen and center fielder Jacob Fabry.
Old Orchard would add to their lead in the 6th, picking up four runs in the sixth inning. Jordyn Van Atta, Sean Washington and Shaun Cooper all reached on walks. A bases loaded single from shortstop Chris Ray would score two. Cooper would then score on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch would score Ray, putting the Surge ahead 9-4.
Left-handed pitcher Michael Romano would take over the mound in the seventh, ending the night for starter Jeremy Hall. Hall threw for 6 complete innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while walking one and striking out three.
The Explorers would tie the game at 9-9 in the seventh inning. Jackson collected another RBI. First baseman Brian Fay and catcher Nathan Ruiz would each knock RBI singles. A wild pitch and an error would allow two more Sullivan players to reach home.
Surge designated hitter Sean Washington would lead off the eighth with a walk. Brandon Cooksey would advance him to second, while a Cooper fly-out would send him to third. A passed ball would score Washington, giving the Surge a 10-9 lead.
Romano picked up his second win of the season, throwing for three complete innings. He allowed five runs on four hits, while walking none and striking out three.
The Surge were outhit by the Explorers 11-7, with left fielder Shaun Cooper leading the team with two. Luc Pomales picked up his league leading 13th RBI of the season.
The Surge take on the Explorers for game three of their four-game series tonight at 6:30 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Emil Flaquer will be starting on the mound.
