Secretary of State Matt Dunlap declared Mark Holbrook the winner of the Republican primary for Maine’s 1st Congressional District on Thursday, setting up a possible recount.

Holbrook, of Brunswick, had 58 more votes than Ande Smith of North Yarmouth on Wednesday night.

But on Thursday afternoon, Dunlap called Holbrook to let him know that he’d won the election by 55 votes.

Smith spokesman Patrick Marvin issued a statement late Thursday night that said his candidate will request a recount with the secretary of state on Friday before holding a press conference around 1:30 p.m. at the State House in Augusta.

The winner will challenge Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree.
