One person was killed Wednesday night in a head-on, two-vehicle crash on West River Road in Sidney, a scene where police said they found alcohol.

Laurie A. Garland, of Sidney, was driving a 2002 Dodge Stratus in a southerly direction and crossed the centerline, according to a press release from Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon. Garland was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garland’s vehicle struck a northbound 2003 Pontiac Bonneville occupied by two juveniles. Reardon said the juveniles suffered minor injuries, and one of them was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center.

WCSH-TV reported that alcohol was found inside the juveniles’ car. Reardon said that blood tests were conducted on the juveniles, a standard procedure whenever there is a fatal accident. It’s not clear who was driving the Bonneville at the time of the crash.

“It is unknown at this point in the investigation whether there will be criminal charges,” Reardon said in the release. “Deputies are putting the pieces together to answer a number of questions. Our condolences go out to the family for their loss.”

The accident was reported at 9:48 p.m. near box 3834, and the road was shut down for more than three hours. Responders from the Oakland and Winslow police departments and personnel from the Sidney Fire Department and Delta Ambulance assisted at the scene.

According to court documents, Garland had a history of driving-related offenses. She had a 2013 conviction for operating under the influence and other criminal driving offenses.
