With Superintendent of Schools Marc Gousse leaving the Westbrook School Department June 30, school officials are in the beginning stages of the search for his replacement.

According to School Committee Chairman Jim Violette, the district has hired Augusta-based Maine School Management to help with the superintendent’s search.

“They can give the School Committee tremendous guidance,” he said Wednesday. “We are just starting to establish a blueprint on how we’re going to pursue a superintendent’s search.”

Gousse, the superintendent since 2011, was officially hired in early June by the Mount Desert Island Regional School System in Bar Harbor.

Violette said the committee will most likely not appoint an interim, as Gousse will be assisting the department through much of the transition period this summer. However, he said, if an interim is needed, that would be looked at sometime in August.

“We’re trying to formulate a committee,” he said, adding that there will not be  a national search, which is expensive and lengthy. “Maine School Management feels there are some tremendous candidates in the New England region that would be very interested in this position.”

The district will also be searching for a replacement for Westbrook High School Principal Jon Ross, who is leaving to lead the Acton school district. Violette said Peter Lancia, the director of teaching and learning, who is also considered assistant superintendent, will be leading the search for Ross’s replacement.
