The public is welcome to attend the christening of the Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) on Saturday at Bath Iron Works and entry is free.

The ship is the second in the Zumwalt class of guided missile destroyers to be built by BIW. The ship is named after Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor, a Navy SEAL who was awarded the Medal of Honor for the heroic actions in Iraq that cost him his life in 2006.

Guests may enter the shipyard through the Pedestrian Gate, located slightly south of the South Gate, starting at 9 a.m. The formal ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 11:15 a.m.

Park and ride buses will leave from the James Building (BIW Surface Ship Support Center) at 290 Bath Road in Brunswick and the Taste of Maine restaurant on Route 1 in Woolwich starting at 8 a.m. The buses will be available after the ceremony to return to the parking areas.

People are strongly encouraged to use the park and ride buses because there will be limited parking at BIW.

BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser said people should expect to have their bags searched upon entering the shipyard. “We will be taking multiple security measures,” he said.
